Backyard Bird’s Nest Supply Kit

You keep your feeders full…

…..you offer a variety of seeds for the many different birds that frequent your yard.

…………..but what else can you do for them?

  • Shades of Purple Bird's Nest Kit

Well, when we shear our animals we discard the short and unwanted fibers. We then found a few nests that had been fortified and insulated using this wool/mohair/alpaca. I have made a few Nest Kits using natural wool roving and yarn scraps. I hang the kits near where I feed the birds and they pick at it for the wool or yarn they desire to adorn their nest.

This can be a DIY or take a look at my samples and pick which colors you prefer.

For the Love of Water!!

Over the last few weeks we have had water pressure issues as well as occasional water outages. Living with these issues has made me so much more appreciative of water. The sound of water running is so soothing. The feel of warm water on your hands when you wash off the grime from working outside resets your mind to start working on your next task. Timing correctly your showers, your loads of laundry and even watering the plants and animals on the farm had become yet another aspect of farm management. Now throw in kids….constantly getting dirty and having no water to wash, needing a drink of water and no water runs from the tap.

We live atop a small ridge in WNC with well water. Fixing it myself seems almost impossible because with the combination of water, electricity and a web of pipes….it seems like work for a magician. How do those feel that live in an arid envirnoment? It seems to me to be even more magic to have water flow up through a pipe there there is no water in sight. We finally got an experienced ‘old-timer’ plumber to fix our problem and not charge us an arm, leg or worse! The pressure tank needed a boost of air pressure added and the ‘nipple’ needed cleaning……thats it…….simple……..if you are a magician!!

The last month has re-ignited my goal of getting rain barrels set up around my farm to collect and use rain water for my plants and animals. Stay tuned for details and photos of my progress getting 4 rain barrels set up and running!!
