For the Love of Water!!

Over the last few weeks we have had water pressure issues as well as occasional water outages. Living with these issues has made me so much more appreciative of water. The sound of water running is so soothing. The feel of warm water on your hands when you wash off the grime from working outside resets your mind to start working on your next task. Timing correctly your showers, your loads of laundry and even watering the plants and animals on the farm had become yet another aspect of farm management. Now throw in kids….constantly getting dirty and having no water to wash, needing a drink of water and no water runs from the tap.

We live atop a small ridge in WNC with well water. Fixing it myself seems almost impossible because with the combination of water, electricity and a web of pipes….it seems like work for a magician. How do those feel that live in an arid envirnoment? It seems to me to be even more magic to have water flow up through a pipe there there is no water in sight. We finally got an experienced ‘old-timer’ plumber to fix our problem and not charge us an arm, leg or worse! The pressure tank needed a boost of air pressure added and the ‘nipple’ needed cleaning……thats it…….simple……..if you are a magician!!

The last month has re-ignited my goal of getting rain barrels set up around my farm to collect and use rain water for my plants and animals. Stay tuned for details and photos of my progress getting 4 rain barrels set up and running!!

Comfort Foods

Soothing the soul with food when your body doesn’t feel well. Everyone has their go to ‘comfort foods’…sometimes they are healthy, but most of the time they are NOT. Where does this need come from? Is it based on the foods you ate as a child or does it come from a special happy memory food event? For my Italian husband, it is anything smothered in red spaghetti sauce and a chunk of bread to sop it all up. This could fall into both categories of childhood foods and happy food events.

For me, comfort food can be anything from chocolate and wine to couscous, steak and broccoli to a nice big honey chicken almond salad. I often take notice when I need to fill up with comfort foods. It makes me stop and think about my current situation, but I think subconsciously I am sensing the feeling I had when I ate that food last.

One prime example occurs every time my son has needed surgery for his cleft lip and palate. It is high stress for me and my husband, but we outwardly must remain strong for our son. We often head to the cafeteria for a ‘snack’ as soon as the doctor brings him back to prep for surgery. Neither of us feel particularly hungry, but that doesn’t stop us. On our last trip to the hospital cafeteria, we sat down looking at the pile of foods we had picked out for our ‘snack’. For my husband…a slice of pizza, a stromboli, breadsticks, a side of extra meatballs and sauce and a yogurt. For me…sushi, yogurt, a fried chicken sandwich and a coffee. WHAT? WHY? We just looked at each other and laughed. We were so stressed out…did the food help? I like to think it did.

Does this work the opposite way? I haven’t put much thought into it before now. Does a negative food event affect your opinion of an event the next time you have that food. An example…you are eating a taco salad and you are given some bad news. In 5 years you attend a dinner party where they serve taco salad. Do you subconsciously feel the ‘bad feelings’ even though the dinner party ids going very well? Do you leave early? Does your relationship with the host become strained because of the ‘old’ feelings? I plan to look at this in my life…and hopefully fill my life with more positive food events!!

Maturing as a farmer…

This caught my eye today and really resonates with where I am today with farming…

I heard another farmer once say you know you’re really a farmer when you DON’T accept a free or cheap animal because you know you’re not ready.

Within the past two weeks, I’ve turned down a breeding trio of meat rabbits because I want to raise rabbits in a colony setting, and honestly, rabbits are at the bottom of my animal wants and project list right now.

Just now, Ted called on his way home to talk about hogs because somebody offered him two piglets for a cheap price. We talked it over, and even though these are high on my list of wants for the farm, I’m just not ready for them. This time, I was the one saying we need fencing up first and that I want to pasture raise them, not lock them into an 8×8 pen for six miserable months.

I passed on rabbits AND PIGS…
